While Elijah was on Mount Horeb, God told him He would pass by. Elijah experienced a storm, an earthquake then a fire but then God spoke to him in a calm quiet voice. One of the things God told Elijah to do was to travel back to Israel to a town called Abel Mehola to anoint Elisha to succeed him as a prophet. Elijah set off on the long trip north. – Slide 1
Elijah found Elisha out in a field ploughing with 12 yoke of oxen. – Slide 2
Elijah walked up to Elisha and threw his coat (mantle) over him. It was a sign that Elisha had been chosen by God to become a prophet who would one day take over from Elijah. Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah. – Slide 3
‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ Elisha said, ‘and then I will come with you.’ ‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. So Elisha returned to his parents. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. – Slide 4
He burned his ploughing equipment to cook the meat. There was no way he could now carry on doing the job he had. – Slide 5
He then shared the meat with his parents and the people who had come to say goodbye. They had a big feast together. – Slide 6
After eating and saying goodbye, Elisha set off with Elijah to begin the new job that God had chosen for him. – Slide 7
