1
The very day that Jesus’ tomb was found to be empty, two of Jesus’ disciples were on their way to a village called Emmaus. – Slide 1
2
They were talking to each other about all the things that had happened. – Slide 2
3
While they were talking and debating these things, Jesus Himself approached and began to accompany them (but their eyes were kept from recognising him). – Slide 3
4
Then He said to them, ‘What are these matters you are discussing so intently as you walk along?’ And they stood still, looking sad. – Slide 4
5
Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, ‘Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that have happened there in these days?’ Jesus said to them, ‘What things?’ – Slide 5
6
‘The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene,’ they replied, ‘a man who, with his powerful deeds and words, proved to be a prophet before God and all the people. – Slide 6
7
‘And how our chief priests and rulers handed Him over to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. – Slide 7
8
‘We had hoped that He was the one who was going to redeem Israel. It is now the third day since these things happened. – Slide 8
9
‘Furthermore, some women of our group amazed us. They were at the tomb early this morning … – Slide 9
10
‘… and when they did not find His body … – Slide 10
11
‘… they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels, who said He was alive. – Slide 11
12
‘Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb … – Slide 12
13
‘… and found it just as the women had said … – Slide 13
14
‘… but they did not see Him.’ – Slide 14
15
Jesus said to them, ‘You foolish people—how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! – Slide 15
16
‘Wasn’t it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into His glory?’ – Slide 16
17
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets … – Slide 17
18
Jesus interpreted to them the things written about Himself in all the scriptures. – Slide 18
19
So they approached the village where they were going. Jesus acted as though He wanted to go farther … – Slide 19
20
… but they urged Him, ‘Stay with us, because it is getting toward evening and the day is almost done.’ So He went in to stay with them. – Slide 20
21
When Jesus had taken His place at the table with them, He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. – Slide 21
22
At this point their eyes were opened and they recognised Jesus. Then He vanished out of their sight. – Slide 22
23
They said to each other, ‘Didn’t our hearts burn within us while He was speaking with us on the road, while He was explaining the scriptures to us?’ – Slide 23
24
So they set off immediately … – Slide 24
25
… and returned to Jerusalem. – Slide 25
26
They found the eleven and those with them gathered together and saying, ‘The Lord has really risen, and has appeared to Simon!’ – Slide 26
27
Then they told what had happened on the road, and how they recognised Him when He broke the bread. – Slide 27
