The unforgiving servant

Matthew 18:21-35
A servant who has a huge debt cancelled refuses to forgive those who owe him money.

Peter asked Jesus, ‘Lord, how many times do I have to forgive my brother or sister when they do something wrong against me? Up to seven times?’ <br/>Jesus replied, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. He then told this parable. <br/>‘The kingdom of heaven is like a powerful boss who wanted to settle accounts with those who worked for him. – Slide 1

A man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. – Slide 2

The servant was unable to repay the huge debt and that made his boss very, very angry. – Slide 3

The boss ordered that the man and his family, be auctioned off at the slave market to repay the debt. – Slide 4

On hearing this news, the servant fell on his knees before his powerful boss. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ – Slide 5

The boss took pity on him, cancelled the debt and let him go. – Slide 6

But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. <br/>His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’ <br/>But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. – Slide 7

When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged. – Slide 8

So they went and told their master everything that had happened. – Slide 9

Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I cancelled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ – Slide 10

In anger, his boss had him dragged off into prison, until he paid back all he owed. <br/>After Jesus concluded this parable he said, ‘This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.’ – Slide 11
