Jesus and His disciples left the upper room and headed for the Mount of Olives to a place they regularly went to, called the Garden of Gethsemane. – Slide 1

‘Pray that you will not fall into temptation,’ Jesus told them. ‘My soul is overwhelmed to the point of death. Stay here and watch.’ Then He went a stone’s throw away from them to pray. – Slide 2

Jesus was deeply distressed and troubled. He knelt down and prayed. – Slide 3

‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me – Slide 4

An angel appeared to strengthen Him. – Slide 5

In anguish Jesus prayed more earnestly and His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. – Slide 6

Jesus returned to His disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Simon Peter, could you not keep watch for one hour?’ Jesus asked. ‘Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.’ – Slide 7

Jesus went away again and prayed the same thing. – Slide 8

When He returned the disciples were asleep. They did not know what to say to Him. – Slide 9

Jesus went and continued praying. – Slide 10

When Jesus returned the disciples were asleep again. ‘Are you sleeping and resting?’ Jesus asked. ‘Look, the hour has come and the son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise, let’s go! Here comes my betrayer!’ – Slide 11

­As Jesus was speaking, Judas arrived with the temple guards, the Chief Priests, elders and a crowd armed with clubs and swords. Judas had already told them he would identify Jesus by greeting Him with a kiss. – Slide 12

Judas came forward and kissed Jesus saying, ‘Greetings Rabbi.’ – Slide 13

‘Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?’ Jesus asked him. – Slide 14

As the guards stepped forward to arrest Jesus, Peter drew his sword. – Slide 15

Peter struck the servant of the High priest cutting off his ear. – Slide 16

‘Put your sword back in its place,’ Jesus demanded, ‘for all those who draw a sword will die by the sword. I could call 12 legions of angels to deliver me but it must happen this way.’ – Slide 17

Jesus then touched the man’s ear and healed him. – Slide 18

Jesus then addressed the chief priests and elders. ‘Do you think I am leading a rebellion that you come to me with swords and clubs? You could have arrested me in the Temple courts but you didn’t. This is the hour when darkness reigns.’ – Slide 19

They led Jesus off. The disciples all turned and fled. – Slide 20
