Parable of the ten bridesmaids

Matthew 25:1-13
Five wise and five foolish bridesmaids wait for the bridegroom to arrive.

Jesus was teaching His disciples about signs of the end times. He then told them this parable so people could be ready for that time. – Slide 1

‘At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten bridesmaids (virgins) who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.’ – Slide 2

In weddings of that time a date was set for the wedding. On that day the bride would wait with her bridesmaids for the groom to arrive at her house with his companions. The exact time of his arrival was not known. The bridegroom would then lead his bride and her bridesmaids back to his house for the wedding festivities. – Slide 3

‘Five of the bridesmaids were wise and brought their lamps with a jar of extra oil. – Slide 4

‘But the other five were foolish and brought their lamp without any extra oil. – Slide 5

‘The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. – Slide 6

‘At midnight the cry rang out: “Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!” – Slide 7

‘Then all bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, “Give us some of your oil as our lamps are going out.” – Slide 8

‘“No,” they replied, “there may not be enough for us all. Quickly, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.” – Slide 9

‘But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The bridesmaids who were ready went with him to the wedding banquet at his house. The door was shut behind them. – Slide 10

‘Later the other five bridesmaid arrived at the bridegroom’s house, their lamps lit with the oil they had purchased. They knocked on the door shouting, “Lord, Lord, open the door for us!” – Slide 11

‘But he replied, “Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.”’ – Slide 12

Jesus concluded the parable by saying, ‘Keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.’ – Slide 13
