After facing a violent storm at sea, Jesus and His disciples arrived on the other side of the Sea of Galilee in a region know as the Gerasenes. – Slide 1
As Jesus stepped ashore, a man possessed by demons met Him. For a long time this man had lived wild among the tombs. – Slide 2
Many times he had been bound in chains and shackles to try to control his wild behaviour but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demons into the wilds. – Slide 3
No one was strong enough to subdue him. Every night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. – Slide 4
When the wild man saw Jesus, he ran and fell on his knees in front of Him. – Slide 5
Jesus commanded, ‘Come out of this man, you impure spirit!’ – Slide 6
The man yelled at the top of his voice, ‘What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!’ Jesus addressed the occult powers controlling the man. ‘What is your name?’ He demanded. – Slide 7
‘My name is Legion,’ he replied, ‘for we are many.’ The demons begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. – Slide 8
A large herd of pigs was on the nearby hillside. – Slide 9
‘Send us into the pigs,’ the demons begged. – Slide 10
Jesus gave the impure spirits permission to go into the pigs. The herd of around 2,000 in number, rushed down the steep bank into sea and were drowned. – Slide 11
The man was delivered of his torment – Slide 12
He was calm, sane and at peace. – Slide 13
The shocked pig herders ran off and reported what had happened. The local people went out to look at the scene. – Slide 14
When they came to Jesus, they saw the wild untameable man sitting peacefully. He was dressed and in his right mind. – Slide 15
The local people were afraid and begged Jesus to leave the region. – Slide 16
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been freed from the demons begged to go with Him. – Slide 17
‘Go home to your own people,’ Jesus replied. ‘Tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has show mercy to you.’ – Slide 18
The man obeyed. He went off through the region of the Decapolis telling them how much Jesus had done for him. Everyone who heard his story was amazed. – Slide 19
