Wise Men (Magi) in the East saw a new and very bright star in the sky. To them it was the sign of a newborn king. They set off in the direction of the star to bring Him gifts. – Slide 1

They travelled at night following the star and rested during the day. – Slide 2

‘Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews?’ the men asked. We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’ – Slide 6

Herod was alarmed to hear of a newborn king. (Historical note: Herod had previously been defeated in battles with the Parthian peoples from the East and he did not want them supporting a new king). – Slide 7

Herod called the chief priest and teachers of the law and asked where the Messiah was to be born. They got out the ancient scrolls of the prophets. – Slide 8

So they went back on another route that did not go through Jerusalem. – Slide 18

An angel of the Lord then warned Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up, take the child and his mother to Egypt and stay there until I tell you to return. Herod is planning to kill baby Jesus.’ – Slide 19

Joseph got up at once and they set off towards Egypt and safety. (Many years before God had told the prophet Hosea that His son would be in Egypt and would be called back from that land). – Slide 20
