Samuel hears a voice in the night

Eli, Samuel and God's voice in the night.

The boy Samuel served the Lord under Eli the High Priest. In those days the Lord did not speak directly to people very often. There were very few visions. Samuel was asleep one night when he heard a Voice calling, ‘Samuel.’ – Slide 1
Eli the high priest was in his bed. Samuel went to find him. – Slide 2
Eli’s eyes were so weak he was almost blind. – Slide 3
Samuel woke him. ‘I am here. You called me.’  <br/>But Eli said, ‘I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.’ – Slide 4
So Samuel went back to bed. – Slide 5
The Voice called again, ‘Samuel!’ – Slide 6
Samuel again went to Eli and said, ‘I am here. You called me.’ <br/>Again Eli said, ‘I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.’ – Slide 7
Samuel went back to bed. Who was calling him? <br/>Then he heard the Voice calling for a third time, ‘Samuel.’ – Slide 8
Samuel got up and went to Eli. – Slide 9
He said, ‘I am here. You called me.’ – Slide 10
Then Eli realised the Lord was calling the boy. – Slide 11
So he told Samuel, ‘Go to bed. If He calls you again, say, “Speak, Lord. I am your servant, and I am listening.”’ – Slide 12
So Samuel went and lay down in bed. <br/>The Lord came and stood there. He called as He had before. He said, ‘Samuel, Samuel!’ – Slide 13
Samuel said, ‘Speak, Lord. I am your servant, and I am listening.’ – Slide 14
The Lord told Samuel that as Eli’s sons had been very wicked and led people to disobey God they would be punished. Eli would also be punished as he had not corrected his sons. – Slide 15
Samuel lay down until morning. He was afraid to tell Eli about the vision. <br/>But Eli said to him, ‘Samuel, my son!’ <br/>Samuel answered, ‘I am here.’ – Slide 16
Eli asked, ‘What did the Lord say to you? Don’t hide it from me. May God punish you terribly if you hide from me anything He said to you.’  So Samuel told Eli everything. Then Eli said, ‘He is the Lord. Let Him do what He thinks is best.’ – Slide 17
The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up. He did not let any of Samuel’s messages fail to come true. Then all Israel knew Samuel was a prophet of the Lord. – Slide 18
As Samuel grew up the Lord continued to show Himself to Samuel at Shiloh. He also showed Himself to Samuel through His word. – Slide 19
