In early Bible times, there was a man who lived in a place called Uz. His name was Job. He was a good and honest man. He obeyed God and refused to do evil things. – Slide 1

Job had seven sons and three daughters. – Slide 2
3
He had 7,000 sheep and 3,000 camels. He had 500 pairs of oxen and 500 donkeys. He also had many servants. – Slide 3

He was the richest person in that part of the world. He would have wonderful meals and invite all his children to eat with him. And he would offer sacrifices to God for all his family.
He was successful and happy. But then one day everything in his life was changed by bad news and lots of it. – Slide 4
5
A servant brought a message to Job, ‘Robbers have stolen your oxen and donkeys. Then another servant arrived to say, ‘Your sheep have been struck by lightning.’ But things got even worse. A third servant ran to tell Job that thieves had stolen his camels. Poor Job had lost all his animals and many of the people who looked after them. – Slide 5

Then, as if this was not enough sadness, terrible news followed. A fourth servant rushed to tell him, ‘Your children were eating a feast at a party in the home of your oldest son. Suddenly a strong wind destroyed their house and none of them have survived.’ – Slide 6

When Job heard this news he was very upset. He tore his clothes and he cut off all his hair.
But instead of getting angry with God for allowing all these unfair things to happen he prayed, ‘When I was born, I had nothing. When I die, I will take nothing with me. The Lord has given me all the things that I have. The Lord may choose to take those things away. I will continue to praise the name of the Lord.’
Even after all these terrible things had happened, Job never said any bad things about God. – Slide 7
8
How could Job believe that God cared for him when such bad things happened? Well, more suffering followed. Boils broke out all over Job’s body. They hurt him everywhere, from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head. – Slide 8
9
Job was very upset and he sat down among some ashes. He used a piece of a broken pot to remove the bad bits of skin. – Slide 9
10
Job’s wife said to him, ‘You cannot continue to trust God! Instead, you should blame God, be angry with Him, say nasty things about him and then die. – Slide 10
11
But Job replied, ‘Do not be foolish! We take the good things that God gives us. So we should not be surprised if He tests us with trouble as well.’ – Slide 11
12
Job's friends heard news about his trouble and came to comfort him.
Job told them, ‘All this trouble that has happened to me. I cannot rest. I have no peace in my mind.’
The friends told Job that he must have done something wrong and God was punishing him.’
Job protested, ‘I have such cruel pain. But I have always obeyed the words of my holy God.’ – Slide 12
13
The friends keep on and on at Job that God must have brought these troubles on him because he had been disobedient. But Job insisted, ‘Do not say that I am guilty. Think again, for I am truly a good person. I have not spoken any lies. I know what is right and what is wrong. – Slide 13
14
Job felt upset. God did not seem to be answering his prayers. He started complaining and feeling that life was not worth living. He told God, ‘Even if I have done something wrong, it should bring all this trouble for me. I don’t deserve it.’ – Slide 14
15
His friend continued to tell Job that it must be his fault that these bad things had happened. But Job wailed that it was unfair to say that. ‘I have always lived to please God but now people are laughing at me. Why do good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to me?’
But his friends insisted, ‘It is your disobedience that causes you to speak like that. God always does what is right and fair.’ – Slide 15
16
After many, many days, God finally entered the conversation. There was a storm and God spoke among the thunder and lightning.
‘Job,’ God called. ‘Who do you think you are? Why do you ask questions about my wisdom?
I will ask you some questions and you must answer them. – Slide 16
17
‘Job, were you with me when I made the world? Can you tell me how I made it? Have you walked on the bottom of the deep seas. Have you visited the place where I keep all the snow? Do you know how I keep all the stars in place?’ There were questions after question about God’s creation and Job could not answer them. – Slide 17
18
More questions followed about the animals God had made. ‘Job, do you know when lions become hungry? Can you find food for lion cubs to eat? Do you know that time when the goats on the mountains give birth? Did you, Job, give horses their strength?’ Job could not answer. – Slide 18
19
Was it your wisdom Job, that taught hawks how to fly? Do eagles wait for your command to fly high into the sky?
Questions followed questions and Job was speechless at the power and wisdom of God. – Slide 19
20
Then God asked Job, ‘Do you still want to argue with me, the Almighty God. You say that I have not been fair. Now you must explain what you mean.’ – Slide 20
21
Job replied, ‘I am only a foolish man. I cannot answer your questions. I know that you can do all things. I have been speaking about things that I do not understand. I am so ashamed of the things that I said. I sit here in dirt and in ashes to show you that I am very sorry.’
God them told Job’s friends they had said many things to Job that were not right or helpful. They must make a sacrifice, so that God would not punish them as they deserved for their foolish words. Job’s friends obeyed God and did this. God also told Job to pray for his friends. – Slide 21
22
After Job prayed for his friends, he became well again. The Lord blessed Job more than in the beginning of his life. – Slide 22
23
He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 pairs of oxen and 1,000 donkeys. That was twice as many as he had lost. – Slide 23
24
He had seven sons and three daughters. His daughters were the most beautiful women in the whole land of Uz. – Slide 24
