1
At this time, Jericho was closed off and highly protected because its people were afraid of the Israelites who were camping nearby. The people of Jericho knew two Jewish spies had been in their city and then escaped. – Slide 1
2
Joshua and the Israelites waited for the Lord’s command as to what they would do next. – Slide 2
3
The Lord spoke to Joshua, ‘I will give you Jericho.’ – Slide 3
4
‘Gather an army of men from Israel and march once around the city for six days.’ – Slide 4
5
‘Take the ark of the covenant and have 7 priests march in front of it with trumpets in their hands.’ – Slide 5
6
‘On the 7th day, march around the city 7 times. When a long trumpet blast is heard give a loud shout. Then, the wall surrounding Jericho will fall and the city will be yours.’ – Slide 6
7
So, Joshua passed on all the instructions he received from the Lord to the people of Israel and to the priests. – Slide 7
8
The people of Israel must have found this hard to believe. Yet, they chose to do exactly as the Lord instructed. They remembered how God had led them through the Red sea, guided them through the wilderness and provided them with food. – Slide 8
9
Before setting out Joshua reminded his army, ‘As we march around the city, do not let your voice be heard. Be silent. Only on the seventh day, when we have done seven laps will I give the command to shout.’ – Slide 9
10
At Joshua's command the priests took the trumpets and set out to surround the city of Jericho. The army followed behind. – Slide 10
11
Those carrying the ark of the covenant led the way. You may be wondering what the ark of the covenant is? Well, the ark was a holy object that God commanded the people of Israel to build. It was a symbol of God's promise that He would be present among his people. – Slide 11
12
On the first day they marched around the city once. – Slide 12
13
Then returned to camp for the night. – Slide 13
14
The next day Joshua got up early in the morning to gather the priests and soldiers. – Slide 14
15
Then they took the Ark of the Covenant and again marched around Jericho. – Slide 15
16
When they were finished, they returned to their camp.
On the third day they did the same. – Slide 16
17
The Israelites did this for six days. The people of Jericho were bemused to see the Israelites surrounding their city and they probably expected that at any moment Joshua and his army would try attack the mighty city walls. But the Israelites only marched around the city then went back to their camp for the night. One soldier of Jericho asked, ‘I thought they came to fight us.’ – Slide 17
18
Some people in Jericho even mocked the Israelites, after all, how could anyone expected conquer a city surrounded by a very thick wall, by only walking around it while playing the trumpet? – Slide 18
19
On the 7th day however, it was different. The Israelites set out with the priests and the ark of the covenant just as they had on the other days. But after marching round Jericho they continued to march around it. – Slide 19
20
When they had finished marching around Jericho for the 7th time,
Joshua called out, ‘The Lord has given you Jericho. Shout with all your might.’ – Slide 20
21
At Joshua signal, the priests blew their trumpets … – Slide 21
22
… and the people began to shout as loudly as they could. – Slide 22
23
Guess what? The walls began to shake, cracks appeared … – Slide 23
24
… then in an instant the walls of Jericho fell down flat. – Slide 24
25
Joshua led the army into Jericho. They searched for Rehab and her family and rescued them out of the city. – Slide 25
26
Then, they burned Jericho with everything in it just as God commanded them. However, Rahab and her family were saved and they lived among the people of Israel for the rest of their lives. – Slide 26
27
After the walls of Jericho fell down, all the people of Israel rejoiced in victory God gave to Joshua. God showed his glory and power through this miracle. It was not because of instruments or shouts that the walls of Jericho collapsed. The walls fell because the people of Israel obeyed God's commands. – Slide 27
28
Sometimes God asks us to do things that make no sense to us and that's where faith comes in. We need faith to believe and obey God without hesitation. God knows what He's doing. He has already taken care of all the details. You just have to listen to Him, be brave and praise Him for the victory. – Slide 28
