When Abram moved to Canaan, God promised him that he would be the father of a great nation. He showed him the night sky and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them. So shall your offspring be.’
Later God promised, ‘No longer will you be called Abram but Abraham, (which means father of many). Your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.’
But Abraham and Sarah remained childless. – Slide 1

Sarah thought she was too old to have children and Abraham was afraid he would not have anyone to inherit all God had given them. So they arranged for Abraham to have a child with her servant Hagar and Ishmael was born. But he was not the son God had promised to Abraham and Sarah. And this made Sarah jealous of Hagar. – Slide 2

When Abraham and Sarah were very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing, three messengers from God arrived to see them. One of the visitors told Abraham, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.’
Sarah had overheard this and laughed as she thought this was impossible. – Slide 3

The Lord cared for Sarah as He had promised. Sarah became pregnant. And she gave birth to a son and Abraham named him Isaac (meaning ‘he laughs’). Everything happened at the time God had said it would.
Sarah said, ‘God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me. No one thought that I would be able to have Abraham’s child. But I have given Abraham a son when he was 100 years old.’ – Slide 4

Isaac grew and became old enough to eat food. At that time Abraham gave a great feast. But Sarah saw Ishmael making fun of Isaac.
So Sarah said to Abraham, ‘Throw out this servant woman and her son. When we die, our son Isaac will inherit everything we have. I don’t want her son to inherit any of our things.’
This troubled Abraham very much because Ishmael was also his son.
But God said, ‘Do whatever Sarah tells you. The descendants I promised you will be from Isaac. I will also make the descendants of Ishmael into a great nation. I will do this because he is your son, too.’ – Slide 5

Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a leather bag full of water. He gave them to Hagar and Ishmael then sent them away. They went and wandered in the desert of Beersheba. – Slide 6

Later, all the water was gone from the bag. Ishmael was crying. So Hagar sheltered her son under a bush. Then she went away a short distance and sat down. Hagar thought, ‘My son will die. I cannot watch this happen.’ She sat there and began to cry. – Slide 7

God called to Hagar from heaven. ‘What is wrong, Hagar? Don’t be afraid! I have heard Ishmael crying. Help him up and take him by the hand. I will make his descendants into a great nation.’
Then God showed Hagar a well of water. She rushed to the well, gave Ishmael a drink and he began to recover. – Slide 8

God was with Ishmael as he grew up. He lived in the desert of Paran and learned to shoot with a bow very well. Later he married a wife from Egypt. – Slide 9

In the meantime, Isaac grew up. He was the son God had promised Abraham and Sarah all those many years ago. God had kept His promise to them. – Slide 10
