Abram was camped by the great trees of Mamre at Heron. One day while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day, the Lord appeared to him. – Slide 1

Abram looked up and saw three men standing near him. He bowed face down on the ground before them. Then he invited them to stay and brought water to wash their feet.
These three visitors were no ordinary people. – Slide 2

Abram asked Sarah to bake loaves of bread. He then took one of his best calves and gave it to a servant to prepare a meat dish for his guests. He also gave them milk curds and milk. – Slide 3

While the three visitors ate, Abram stood under the tree near them. One of the visitors asked Abraham, ‘Where is your wife Sarah?’
‘There, in the tent,’ replied Abraham.
Then the Lord said, ‘I will return to you about this time a year from now. At that time your wife Sarah will have a son.’ – Slide 4

Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent. She was past the age when women normally have children. So, she laughed to herself, ‘My husband and I are too old to have a baby.’
Then the Lord said to Abram, ‘Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘I am too old to have a baby’? Is anything too hard for the Lord? No! I will return to you at the right time a year from now. And Sarah will have a son.’
Sarah was afraid and lied, ‘I didn’t laugh.’
But the Lord said, ‘No. You did laugh.’ – Slide 5

Then the visitors got up to leave and started out toward Sodom. Abram walked along with them to send them on their way.
The Lord said, ‘I have heard many things against the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. They are very evil. So I will go down and see if they are as bad as I have heard.’ – Slide 6

As the visitors walked on to Sodom, Abram approached the Lord, ‘Lord, do you plan to destroy the good people along with the evil people in Sodom? What if there are 50 good people in that city? Will you still destroy it?
The Lord replied, ‘If I find 50 good people in the city of Sodom, I will save the whole city because of them.’
Then Abram asked the Lord if he would destroy Sodom if there were 45 good people in it? The Lord again said no.
‘What if there were 40 good people?‘ Abram asked.
Again the answer was that God would not destroy the city. – Slide 7

Abram then nervously asked God if Sodom would be destroyed if there were 30 … then 25 … then 20 good people in the city. Each time God replied He would not destroy the city.
Then Abraham said, ‘Lord, please don’t be angry with me. Let me bother you this one last time. What if you find 10 good people there?’
The Lord said, ‘If I find 10 good people there, I will not destroy it.’ – Slide 8

When the Lord finished speaking to Abram, He left. And Abram returned home. – Slide 9

Two angels with the appearance of men came to Sodom that evening. Lot was sitting near the city gate and invited them to his house. The angels warned Lot, ‘We are about to destroy this city because of the evil that is here. The Lord has sent us to destroy it.’
At dawn the next morning, the angels begged Lot to hurry. ‘Go! Take your wife and your two daughters with you. Then you will not be destroyed when the city is punished.’
But Lot delayed. So, the two angels took the hands of Lot, his wife and his two daughters and led them safely out of the city.
One of the angels said, ‘Run for your lives. Don’t look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Run to the mountains or you will be destroyed.’ – Slide 10
11
The Lord then sent a volcanic burst of sulphur and fumes down from the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah. Both cities were destroyed. – Slide 11
12
Lot, his wife and two daughters had fled from Sodom to the nearby small town called Zoar which the angels had spared.
At that point Lot’s wife disobeyed and turned back. – Slide 12
13
When she did, she was engulfed by the sulphur and ash leaving her looking like a pillar of salt. – Slide 13

Early the next morning, Abraham got up and went to the place where he had stood before the Lord. Abraham looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the Jordan Valley. He saw smoke rising from the land. It was like smoke from a furnace.
God had remembered what Abraham had asked and spared Lot’s life. But he destroyed the city where Lot and his family had lived. – Slide 14
