Abram travels to Egypt

Abram lies about Sarai and it results in trouble.

Abram and his wife Sarah were now living in the land of Canaan. But there came a time when there was not much food in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to find food. – Slide 1

Just before they arrived in Egypt, Abram said to his wife Sarai, ‘You are a very beautiful woman. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This woman is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but let you live. Tell them you are my sister. Then things will go well with me and I will be allowed to live.’ – Slide 2

The people of Egypt saw that Sarai was very beautiful. Some of the Egyptian officers saw her and told the king of Egypt how beautiful she was. They took Sarai to the king’s palace. – Slide 3

The king was kind to Abram because he thought Abram was Sarai’s brother. He gave Abram sheep, cattle and male and female donkeys. Abram was also given male and female servants and camels. – Slide 4

By not telling the truth, Abram was now in a difficult situation. None of this is what God had planned for Abram and Sarai and their future. The King of Egypt planned to marry Sarai. – Slide 5

The Lord sent terrible diseases on the king and all the people in his house for taking Sarai. It was then that the truth came out. Sarai was really Abram’s wife not his sister. – Slide 6

So the king sent for Abram. The king said, ‘What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me Sarai was your wife? Why did you say, ‘She is my sister?’ Here is your wife Sarai. Take her and leave!’ – Slide 7

Then the king commanded his men to make Abram leave Egypt. So Abram and his wife left with everything they owned and returned to Canaan. – Slide 8
