David spares Saul's life

David refuses to harm Saul.

King Saul was jealous of David and wanted to kill him. So when he heard David was hiding among the rocks where there were wild goats he took his soldiers to find him. – Slide 1

King Saul went into a cave but did not know David and his men were hiding at the back of the cave. He took off his cloak to rest for a while. – Slide 2

David’s men whispered, ‘Now is your chance to attack the man who wants to kill you.’ <br/>David crawled nearer to Saul and took out his knife. But instead of attacking his enemy he quietly cut off the corner of his robe. – Slide 3

Then he whispered to his men, ‘Saul is the King God appointed and I must not do anything to harm him.’ David would not allow any of his men to harm King Saul either. <br/>Saul left the cave not knowing that David had spared his life. – Slide 4

David then came out of the cave holding the corner of Saul’s cloak he had cut off. He shouted to Saul, ‘My master and king!’ Saul looked back, and David bowed, then said, ‘You have seen how the Lord put you in my power in the cave. But I refused to kill you. I was merciful to you.  I cut off the corner of your robe, but I didn’t kill you. You’re not chasing someone who will hurt you! May the Lord support me and show that I am right. May he save me from you!’ – Slide 5

Saul thought hard and replied, ‘You are right, and I am wrong. You have been good to me. But I have done wrong to you. The Lord brought me to you, but you did not kill me. May the Lord reward you because you were good to me today. I know you will surely be king one day. You will rule the kingdom of Israel. Promise me you won’t hurt my descendants either.’ <br/>David promised and they left in peace. – Slide 6
