God told the prophet Samuel that because King Saul had been disobedient, a new King would be chosen.
God then sent Samuel to Jesse to anoint one of his sons to be king. Jesse introduced his oldest son to Samuel. God told Samuel, ‘He is not my choice to be King. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ – Slide 1

One by one, Jesse brought out seven of his sons but each time God said no to any of them becoming king either. Samuel asked Jesse, ‘Are these all the sons you have?’
‘There is David, the youngest,’ Jesse answered. ‘He is tending the sheep.’
David was summoned to meet Samuel. The Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint David as King.’
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David as the next King of Israel. From that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. – Slide 2

The Philistines gathered their forces for war against the people of Israel.
A giant called Goliath, with a heavy metal sword and armour, challenged the Israelites to send someone out to fight him but everyone in the army was too scared. David was sent to bring food for his brothers who were in the army and asked, ‘Who is this Philistine who defies the armies of the living God?’ – Slide 3

David went to King Saul and said, ‘Let no one be afraid of this Philistine giant. I will go and fight him. I have killed lions and bears that were attacking our sheep. The Lord who rescued me from lion and bear will rescue me from this Philistine.’
David refused the armour that King Saul offered him. Instead, with his staff in his hand, he chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine. – Slide 4

Goliath laughed at David, ‘Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks? I’ll feed you to the birds and the wild animals!’
David replied, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel. Today the Lord will deliver you into my hands.’
As the Goliath moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the giant. – Slide 5
