Elisha was a prophet of God in Israel who travelled to tell people how God wanted them to live. – Slide 1
2
When Elisha travelled in the area around Shunem, a wealthy woman and her husband would give him food and let him stay in a room they had built for him on the roof of their house. – Slide 2
3
The woman’s husband was old and they did not have a son. Elisha told her, ‘About this time next year, you shall embrace a son.’
The woman could not believe this would happen. – Slide 3
4
But the following spring she bore a son, just as Elisha had said to her. – Slide 4
5
When the child was older, he went outside to help his father reaping the harvest. He became ill and was taken to his mother. The boy became weaker and then died. – Slide 5
6
The woman rode a donkey to find Elisha. Elisha and his servant Gehazi agreed to go to her house. Gehazi was sent ahead with the staff of Elisha to put it on the boy’s head, but there was no sign of life. – Slide 6
7
When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. He shut the door and prayed to the Lord. The child sneezed seven times, and opened his eyes. – Slide 7
8
The woman was summoned and Elisha said, ‘Pick up your son.’ She came in and fell at Elisha’s feet, bowing to the ground. Then she picked up her son. God had raised him to life. – Slide 8
9
Sometime later (when we think the woman’s elderly husband had died), Elisha had a message for her. ‘Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine in the land that will last seven years.’ – Slide 9
10
The woman left her home in Shunem and headed for the land of Philistine by the coast where there was food. – Slide 10
11
She stayed there with her son during the years of the famine. – Slide 11
12
At the end of the seven years, she came back from the land of the Philistines but found her home and land had been taken from her. – Slide 12
13
The new occupant was not prepared to give back her family home and the land her husband had owned. – Slide 13
14
There was no-one in Shunem who could help her so she set off to appeal to the King. – Slide 14
15
Now the King was in a meeting at that time with Elisha’s servant Gehazi.
Gehazi was telling the King about the mighty things God had done through the prophet Elisha. – Slide 15
16
And he was telling the King how God had brought the dead boy of the Shunammite woman back to life. – Slide 16
17
Just at that moment the Shunammite woman appeared before the king. – Slide 17
18
Gehazi was amazed and said, ‘This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.’ – Slide 18
19
The woman explained to the King how her house and land had been taken from her. The King listened carefully. – Slide 19
20
Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, ‘Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.’ – Slide 20
21
The woman returned to live in her home. The land the family owned was restored to her. Those who taken advantage of her had to pay the Shunammite woman the income she had lost during the seven years of famine. – Slide 21
