The Easter Story

The death and resurrection of Jesus.
1
It was two days before Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to arrest Jesus and kill Him. – Slide 1
2
At that time, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.
They were delighted when they heard that Judas would betray Jesus, and they promised that they would give him money. From then on, Judas began to look for a way to betray Jesus. – Slide 2
3
Later, when Jesus and His disciples were eating the Passover meal, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks to God and broke it. Then He gave it to His disciples, saying, ‘Take this and eat, this is my body.’
After that, Jesus also took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God again. Then He gave the cup to His disciples and they all drank from it.
Then Jesus said to them, ‘This is my blood that is poured out for many people as a sacrifice. It marks the covenant between God and His people.’ – Slide 3
4
Then Jesus and His disciples went to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus took Peter, James and John aside and said to them, ‘Sit here and keep watch while I go to pray.’ – Slide 4
5
Jesus walked ahead a little, then knelt down and prayed, asking God if it were possible for Him not to go through His coming time of suffering.
He prayed, saying, ‘Abba, Father! You can do all things. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But do your will, not mine.’ – Slide 5
6
Jesus went away to pray three times, and three times He returned to find His disciples sleeping. He asked them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come.’
‘Look! The Son of Man is being given to sinners. Get up! Let’s go to meet them. The person who has betrayed me is coming.’ – Slide 6
7
While Jesus was still talking, Judas, one of His twelve disciples, suddenly appeared. There was a crowd with Him who were armed with swords and clubs.
Earlier, Judas had said to them, ‘The person that I kiss on the cheek, He is the one that you are wanting, arrest Him.’ Now Judas went straight to Jesus and said, ‘Rabbi!’ And he kissed Jesus on the cheek. Then the others took hold of Jesus and arrested Him. – Slide 7
8
They took Jesus to the house of the High Priest. All of the Jewish council gathered there and were trying to find someone who would say what crime Jesus had committed so that they could have Him killed. But they could not find anything that they could accuse Him.
Then the High Priest asked Jesus, ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed God?’
And Jesus said, ‘I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of God Almighty.’ – Slide 8
9
At this, the High Priest was furious, and he said, ‘You have heard how Jesus has blasphemed God. What should we do with Him?’
And they said, ‘Kill Him.’ – Slide 9
10
Some of the people started to spit on Jesus. They blindfolded Him and beat Him, saying, ‘If you are really a prophet, tell us, who hit you?’ Then the guards took Jesus and were slapping Him. – Slide 10
11
Early in the morning, all the Jewish leaders met together and discussed what they should do with Jesus. Then they tied up His hands and took Him to Pilate. – Slide 11
12
Pilate asked him, ‘So, are you the king of the Jews?”
Jesus replied, ‘That’s what you have said.’
And the chief priests accused Jesus of many things.
Pilate asked again, ‘Why don’t you respond to what they are saying? Hear all the things that they are accusing you of.’
But Jesus kept silent and didn’t answer, and Pilate was amazed. – Slide 12
13
Pilate took Jesus out to the crowd, and they shouted, ‘Crucify Him!’
And Pilate asked them, ‘Why? What crime has he committed?’
But they kept shouting, ‘Crucify Him!’ – Slide 13
14
Then the soldiers took Jesus away and made fun of Him, saying, ‘Bless the king of the Jews!’ They hit His head with a stick and spat on Him while pretending that they were worshipping Him. – Slide 14
15
When they finished ridiculing Jesus, they took Him to a place called Golgotha. They nailed Him to a cross and attached a sign with the reason that He was being crucified. It said, ‘The king of the Jews.’ – Slide 15
16
Two robbers were also being crucified. One was on the cross to the right of Jesus and the other was on His left. – Slide 16
17
The chief priests and the teachers of the law made fun of Jesus, saying, ‘He only healed other people, but He can’t save himself. He should come down from the cross right now. Then we will see and believe.’
At three o’clock, Jesus cried out, ‘Eloi, eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?’
Then Jesus gave a loud shout and took His last breath and died. – Slide 17
18
Joseph, a man from Arimathea, took Jesus’ body down from the cross. He wrapped the body in a linen cloth and put Jesus in a tomb that had been dug out of rock. Then he rolled a large stone in front of the entrance. – Slide 18
19
On Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene, Salome, and Mary the mother of James, went to the tomb and saw that the large stone had been rolled away from the entrance. – Slide 19
20
When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man wearing white clothes, and they were shocked. But the young man said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified.’
‘He has risen from the dead. He’s not here! Go to Peter and the other disciples and say, “Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee and you will see Him there, just as He told you.”’ – Slide 20
21
After Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene. He had cast seven demons out of her in the past. Mary then told the others that Jesus was alive again, but they didn’t believe her. – Slide 21
22
Later, Jesus appeared to the eleven disciples and He scolded them for having no faith and hard hearts, because they hadn’t believed those who had first seen Him after he rose from the dead.
Then Jesus told them, ‘Go all over the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Whoever believes the Good News and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.’ – Slide 22
23
After Jesus spoke to the disciples, He was taken up to heaven where He sat at God’s right side. Later the disciples went and preached the Good News all over the world. – Slide 23
