The seven years of abundance in Egypt came to an end. Then the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all the other lands, but in Egypt there was plenty of food. – Slide 1
2
When the famine had spread over the whole of Egypt, Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians. And people from other lands came to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe everywhere. – Slide 2
3
When Jacob heard there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, ‘Why are you looking at each other? I hear that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain so that we may live and not die.’ – Slide 3

So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt. Joseph’s brother Benjamin was kept at home as Jacob wanted to protect him. – Slide 4
5
They arrived in Egypt to buy grain not knowing that Joseph was the ruler of the country and in charge of the grain supplies. – Slide 5

Joseph’s brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the ground. When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognised them, but he pretended not to know them. He spoke to them harshly. ‘Where do you come from?’
They replied, ‘From the land of Canaan, to buy grain for food.’
Joseph then accused them of being spies. – Slide 6
7
They exclaimed, ‘No, my lord! Your servants have come to buy grain for food! We are the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. We are a family of 12 brothers. The youngest is with our father and one is no longer alive. We are honest men! We are not spies.’ – Slide 7

Joseph told them, ‘You are spies! You will not depart from this place unless your youngest brother is brought to me. One of you must go and get your brother, while the rest of you remain in prison. I shall then see if you are telling the truth.’ – Slide 8
9
Joseph imprisoned them all for three days. On the third day Joseph said to them, ‘Do as I say and you will live.’ – Slide 9
10
‘Leave one of your brothers confined here in prison while the rest of you go and take grain back for your hungry families. But you must bring your youngest brother to me.’ – Slide 10
11
The brothers said to one another, ‘Surely we’re being punished because of the way we treated Joseph. We saw how distressed he was when he cried to us for mercy, but we refused to listen.’
They did not know that Joseph could understand them as he was speaking to them through an interpreter.
Joseph turned away from them and wept. – Slide 11
12
Joseph turned around and gave orders to the guards. – Slide 12
13
Simeon was taken away to prison as a hostage until the brothers returned with Benjamin. – Slide 13
14
Then Joseph gave secret orders to fill their bags with grain, to return each man’s money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. His orders were carried out. – Slide 14
15
The brother loaded their grain on their donkeys and left. – Slide 15
16
When one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey at their resting place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack. – Slide 16
17
He said to his brothers, ‘My money was returned! Here it is in my sack!’ – Slide 17
18
Then they discovered that each one of them had their money in their sack.’ – Slide 18
19
They turned trembling to one another and said, ‘What in the world has God done to us?’ – Slide 19
20
They returned to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan and told him all the things that had happened to them. Jacob said, ‘You are making me childless! Joseph is gone. Simeon is gone. And now you want to take Benjamin! Everything is against me.’ – Slide 20
21
‘Benjamin will not go to Egypt with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If anything happens to him you will bring down my grey hair in sorrow to the grave.’ – Slide 21
