Jesus rides triumphantly into Jerusalem on a donkey.

The feast of Passover was approaching. Jesus led the disciples on the long uphill route towards Jerusalem. – Slide 1

When they came to Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, Jesus spoke to two of His disciples instructing them, ‘Go to the village ahead and just as you enter you will find a colt (the foal of a donkey) tied there that no-one has ridden before.’ – Slide 2

‘If anyone asks you what you are doing tell them, “The Lord needs it and will return it.”’ – Slide 3

The two disciples set off immediately. – Slide 4

They found the young donkey outside in the street tied to a doorway and started to untie it. – Slide 5

As they did so the colt’s owners protested, ‘What are you doing, untying that colt?’ ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly,’ they replied. The owners let them borrow the donkey. – Slide 6

The two disciples led the colt back to Jesus. – Slide 7

They threw their coats on the young donkey then Jesus sat on it. – Slide 8

Many people spread their cloaks on the ground for Jesus to ride over while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. – Slide 9

Jesus rode towards Jerusalem fulfilling what the prophet Zechariah had written (Zechariah 9:9): ‘Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ – Slide 10

­ People ran ahead of Jesus shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ (Hosanna means ‘Save’). – Slide 11

Others shouted, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ – Slide 12

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples.’ – Slide 14

‘I tell you,’ replied Jesus, ‘if they keep quiet the stones will cry out.’ – Slide 15

As they approached Jerusalem, Jesus looked over the city and wept over it. – Slide 16

‘If only you understood that today would bring you peace but what is happening is hidden from you,’ Jesus cried. ‘The days are coming when your enemies will build an embankment, surround and trap you. They will dash you to the ground and not leave one stone on another because you did not recognise the time of God coming to you.’ – Slide 17

As Jesus rode into the city, people rushed to find out what the commotion was about. ‘Who is this?’ they asked. – Slide 18
